PROTECTED SPACE: Computer operations area containing file servers, data communications equipment, paper files and computer operations work area.

WHY FM-200 FIRE SUPPRESSION: Austin’s computer operations room contains sensitive equipment and files that are vulnerable to water and chemicals, as well as fire. The space is occupied during normal work hours, so Austin required fire protection that would be safe for both equipment and people.

EXTINGUISHING EVENT: In the early morning hours of June 17, 1994, a UPS unit in the computer operations room overheated and began to burn. The Kidde FM-200 System cut power to the threatened area and discharged FM-200 into the room.

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE: The UPS unit, where the fire started, was the only equipment damaged in the protected space. The quick response of the system minimized smoke damage, and the agent itself acted cleanly with no residue.

RECOVERY: After ventilating the computer operations room and repairing the UPS unit, Austin Quality Foods returned to normal operations.
